Look for the idea the words share.
Each round gives you one or more clue words. Your job is to enter a different English word that makes a convincing connection. It might name a shared object, describe a common property, or use two meanings of the same word.
A piano has keys. A key opens a lock. The word is familiar; seeing both meanings together is the discovery.
Your five-round rhythm
- 01–03
Two-word bridges
Find one word that belongs beside both clues. A brilliant match to only one clue leaves half the bridge missing.
- 04
Three-word bridges
Find a single idea that reaches all three clues. Materials, colours, actions, and everyday objects are useful places to look.
- 05
The closest connection
One clue remains. Enter a word with a closely related meaning. Think “tiny” and “small”, rather than something merely found nearby.
Make one considered guess.
Type one word and select Connect, or press Enter. You have one valid answer per round. There is no speed bonus, so you can take a moment to consider every clue.
A blank entry, a phrase, a clue repeated as your answer, or a word outside the word list does not use your turn. You can correct it and try again. Inflected forms of clues are treated as repeated clues too.
See what you connected.
After a valid answer, you’ll see your points and a strength indicator for each clue. You’ll also discover a featured connection and the explanation behind it. There may be several sensible answers: the featured word is a useful route through the clues, rather than a claim that every other route is wrong.
Each round is worth up to 1,000 points, making 5,000 the highest total. Read how the scoring works for the distinction between recognized answers and word-vector estimates.
Find your own pace.
The daily selection is the same for everyone and changes at 00:00 UTC. Your browser saves a table as you play, so a refresh can bring you back to the same round. Finishing records a receipt in your statistics.
Want more room to explore? Practice tables draw another selection from the collection without changing your daily streak. The archive keeps earlier dated tables available as the collection grows.
Share the feeling, keep the surprise.
Your receipt can be copied as a compact score and five coloured squares. It leaves out your words and the featured answers, so someone else can enjoy making the connections for themselves.
Put a little wordplay into your day.
Five rounds, one word at a time. Your next connection is waiting.
